Great Rock Golf Club
Great Rock Golf Club
Great Rock has been closed the last few years, but used to give great deals on the golf apps.
There are rumors that it will reopen in 2022. Nothing is confirmed. I played a few times before
it closed. They said the course dropped off towards the end, but I don’t remember it being
terrible. My biggest gripe was the 9th hole was in the middle of the course. Other courses are
like this, but they at least have a halfway house. There were a few times we ended up on the
wrong tee box as well.
The fairways were narrow, with a lot of hills and trees. I saw an old review where to play
well, you need someone who knows the course well. We didn’t have any one like that, and we
struggled. The layout was confusing, and it was pretty empty. It is in a nice community, but I
guess they aren’t golfers. Maybe they are just like me and prefer other courses.
After your first tee shot, you may as well wave goodbye to the clubhouse. You won’t see it
again until your approach shot on 18. The layout is nice. My biggest thought is they could have
made it wider and put in a nice 9 hole or par 3 course. Between hitting off hills, trying to stay
out of trees, it requires more accuracy than the typical golfer has. I had a few good holes, but it
was mostly a struggle.
I commented on the lack of a halfway house, but sometimes you need that little break. I
could have used it every time, plus a drink and snack. If the rumors of new owners taking over
are true, hopefully they redesign it a bit. Looking at the satellite map, there isn’t that much
room to play with where the 1st and 18th are. Maybe if they take out the driving range.
While it seems like I just complain about this course, I did at least have enjoyable days there.
It is easy to criticize when I compare to other courses after the fact. They did have a beautiful
club house, especially the restaurant, bar and patio. I remember enjoying the food, which is hit
or miss at a golf course. Lets hope it reopens and they make some changes to bring some life to
the course.
